Amazon now sells Fire TV Sticks on two different operating systems. Most existing devices run Fire OS, which is based on Android. Newer budget models run Vega OS, a platform Amazon introduced to developers in September 2025 and built around React Native and web apps instead of Android apps.
What changes for viewers
On Vega OS devices, apps are installed from the Amazon Appstore. The Downloader app and standard Android APK sideloading are not available. Amazon’s developer documentation says Fire OS remains supported and that some existing Fire OS apps can be streamed to Vega devices through its Cloud App Program, but only for apps Amazon selects.
According to AFTVnews, which tracks Fire TV hardware, the Vega OS models so far are the Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025), the second-generation Fire TV Stick HD (2026) and the third-generation Fire TV Stick 4K. Fire TV Stick 4K Max, Fire TV Stick 4K Plus, Fire TV Cube and smart TVs with Fire TV built in still run Fire OS. Amazon product pages do not always make the difference obvious.
How to check your own device
- Open Settings, then My Fire TV (or Device and Software on a Fire TV smart TV), then About.
- Look at the software version. Fire OS devices show “Fire OS” with a version such as 7 or 8. Vega OS devices show “OS” with a version number starting with 1.
What it means if you use IPTV
If the player app you want is listed in the Amazon Appstore for your device, you can install it normally. If a guide asks you to use Downloader or install an APK, it will not work on a Vega OS stick. Before buying a new streaming stick for IPTV, confirm which operating system it runs and whether your preferred player is in its app store. Our free 24-hour trial is a good moment to test this on the exact device you own.
